Melissa Brown Bayside Family Counselling

As a qualified counsellor and an accredited social worker, Melissa has over 14 years of experience in community health and academic services. Melissa currently works as a specialist family violence practitioner at the Magistrates Court of Victoria and has been a private practitioner since 2009. Her clients include children and youth, women and families, and older adults/ seniors.

Melissa runs support groups for women who have experienced family violence, and for families who have adolescents or children using family violence against their parents and loved ones. Melissa believes in supporting families who are experiencing or have experienced crisis or trauma, and respects how challenging those events can impact individual family members as well as the family as a whole.

Melissa’s passion is to help those who want to be heard, for those who need to feel trust again, and for those who have found the courage to ask for help to find their “voice”.

Melissa is trained to respond to sexual assault, suicide ideation and non-suicidal self-injury, mental health issues experienced by youth, and elder abuse prevention. Issues Melissa has worked with include: understanding trauma and recovery after family violence, grief and loss, changes in families due to separation or divorce, older adults living with isolation, loss of mobility or freedom, and children’s recovery from trauma.

Among the tools Melissa uses are client-centered counselling and solution-focused practice, mindfulness, play and sandplay therapy, and other supportive therapeutic methods, and narrative therapy. Melissa is a qualified child care worker and has worked as a play therapist, school counsellor at a special needs school, children’s bereavement counsellor, and a children’s contact worker. Melissa was also a VET educator at RMIT University and the Australian College of Applied Psychology for several years, lecturing in counselling, case management, psychology, suicide prevention and cultural diversity.
