Your Autumn Immune Essentials

Nutrients, Herbs & Marta’s Magical Muck

When it comes to immune resilience, I often find patients are surprised to learn that the work happens well before the first winter cold arrives. The nutrients and herbs I’m about to share aren’t emergency interventions, they are seasonal foundations. And right now, in May, is exactly when we want them on board. They are your Autumn immune essentials. But before I tell you about the nutrients and herbs I urge my patients to use to to prepare for winter I want to chat about the other things that also make a difference.

Almost without saying, it is so important to maintain a healthy diet minimising sugar, alcohol and caffeine which all deplete numerous nutrients from your body and collectively weaken your immunity. Furthermore, I cannot stress enough, that the temperature of the foods you eat and drink impact your health. As the cold sets in our environment it is essential to stop eating anything that is cold, straight from the fridge or freezer and warm it up. Keep all your food cooked and warm and your drinks warm too. Maintaining the warmth in your body is essential for thermogenesis, keeping your immunity or Wei Qi strong and keeping your blood and Qi flowing unhindered. Cold tends to stagnate blood, cause pain, penetrate into our heads, hands, feet and necks and expose us to viral and bacterial attack. Warmth is also an Autumn Immune essential.

The Nutrient Essentials

Zinc is arguably the most critical mineral for immune function, and it’s one of the most commonly depleted — especially in those eating a plant-heavy diet, dealing with chronic stress, or navigating gut issues that impair absorption. Zinc is directly involved in the production and activation of immune cells, acts as a potent antiviral in the upper respiratory tract, and supports the integrity of the mucous membranes lining the nose, throat and lungs — your body’s very first line of defence. In Chinese Medicine terms, zinc supports the protective Wei Qi that circulates at the body’s surface. Without adequate zinc, that boundary becomes porous.

Vitamin D is less a vitamin and more a neuroimmune hormone — and by this point in autumn, the majority of Australians (yes, even in Melbourne) are moving into deficiency. Most of us rely on sun exposure for the bulk of our Vitamin D, and as the days shorten and we spend more time indoors, levels quietly drop. Vitamin D modulates both innate and adaptive immune responses, reduces excessive inflammatory signalling, and has been shown in research to lower susceptibility to respiratory tract infections. If you haven’t had your levels checked recently, autumn is the perfect time to do so. Ideal levels I want to see in my patients blood work is 100-150 nmol/L. At the very least aim for levels above 80 nmol/L. Dosing with 2000-4000IU daily or 10,000 IU weekly will help you attain optimal levels faster.

Vitamin C needs little introduction, yet it’s worth understanding why it matters beyond the marketing. Vitamin C is essential for the function of neutrophils and lymphocytes which are the white blood cells that mount your immune response. It is a powerful antioxidant that protects immune cells from oxidative damage during infection, and it supports collagen synthesis in the respiratory mucosa, keeping those delicate lung tissues resilient. Under physical or emotional stress (and who among us isn’t experiencing some of that?), Vitamin C is rapidly depleted. Supplementing therapeutically during winter not just the 60mg you get from a glass of orange juice, makes a meaningful clinical difference.

The Herbal Essentials

Now, to the stars of the clinic – the herbs. This is where naturopathic medicine truly shines, and where I draw on over 25 years of clinical experience in what actually moves the needle for my patients (apart from Acupuncture of course!). These are only 4 of my favourite immune herbs boosting. I have many more for all sorts of reasons. I chose these 4 beauties as they make up key ingredients for your Autumn Immune Essentials.

Echinacea (Echinacea Augustifolia) is the cornerstone of Western herbal immune support — but it’s most effective when used correctly. Rather than reaching for it once you’re already sick, echinacea is best used as a short-course immune primer in early autumn, and again at the onset of symptoms. Its alkylamides and polysaccharides stimulate macrophage activity and natural killer cell function, helping the body mount a faster, more decisive response. It also has direct antiviral properties relevant to the respiratory viruses we see circulating each winter.

Elderflower (Sambucus nigra) is a beautifully gentle yet remarkably effective herb for the upper respiratory tract. Rich in flavonoids, it has antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties, helps reduce congestion and catarrh, and supports the lymphatic system in clearing waste, making it particularly useful when there’s a lot of mucus or swollen glands. It is also wonderfully soothing for children, which is why I reach for it regularly in when I see kids. Elderberries are also used medicinally. Not only are they packed with Vitamin C, support mucosal integrity and has all the antiviral benefits of the flowers it tastes delicious!

Thyme (Thymus vulgars) is one of the most underrated herbs in the respiratory toolkit. A potent antimicrobial and expectorant, thyme is exceptional for the lungs — it helps loosen and clear mucus from the bronchial passages, supports the cilia (tiny hair-like structures that sweep pathogens out of the airways), and has strong antiviral and antibacterial activity. For anyone prone to sore throats, chest infections, bronchitis, or lingering coughs each winter, thyme is non-negotiable.

Eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis) may be less familiar, but it earns its place every single autumn. A classic herb for the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and sinuses, eyebright reduces catarrhal inflammation, relieves congestion and watery eyes, and is particularly valuable for those prone to hayfever, sinus infections, or the kind of head cold that sits behind the eyes and forehead. In Chinese Medicine terms, it supports the Lung’s opening which is the nose.

All four of these herbs are the foundation of Marta’s Magical Muck, my signature herbal blend that has become something of a legend among Shine Health patients over the years. It’s made from premium herbal extracts and designed to be your go to companion from now through to the end of winter. Patients who come in regularly in autumn tell me the same thing every year: the winters they use it are the winters they sail through. If you’d like to get your hands on a bottle, or find out whether it’s right for you as with any herbal or nutritional medicine, it is always best practice to have a consultation so I can assess what is best for your needs.

Alongside these Western herbal allies, there is one classical Chinese herbal formula I return to every single autumn without hesitation: Yu Ping Feng San — translated beautifully as Jade Windscreen Powder. The name itself says everything. Just as a jade screen shields against the wind, this formula creates a protective barrier at the body’s surface, fortifying the Wei Qi that keeps pathogens from penetrating. It is composed of just three herbs Astragalus (Huang Qi), Atractylodes (Bai Zhu) and Siler root (Fang Feng) and together they form one of the most elegantly effective immune preventive formulas in the entire Chinese pharmacopoeia. Astragalus tonifies the Lung Qi and strengthens the protective exterior; Atractylodes fortifies the Spleen to ensure the body is producing robust Qi from the food we eat; and Siler root gently releases any superficial pathogenic influence that may already be lurking at the surface.

What I love about Yu Ping Feng San is that it works beautifully alongside the nutritional supplements I’ve described above — while Zinc, Vitamin D and Vitamin C support immune function at a biochemical and cellular level, Yu Ping Feng San addresses the energetic terrain that makes you susceptible in the first place. Together, they cover both the Western and Eastern dimensions of immune resilience, creating a far more comprehensive and layered defence than either approach alone. For patients who catch every cold going around, or who feel run-down and depleted as winter approaches, this formula is often a genuine game-changer.

Here’s to keeping you healthy this Autumn and upcoming Winter.
